When songs are just made for TV.

April 21st 2008 13:19
Ever heard a song that seemed like it was written for the show it's featured in? When I heard The Last Goodnight's "Pictures of you", I thought that the song had indeed been written specifically to be used in the show "Brothers and Sisters". How wrong was I. You know which line had me 100% convinced?

"This is a mother waiting by the phone, praying for her son".

Now, in hindsight, there are probably many mothers out there with sons and daughters on duty, and they're all "waiting by the phone, praying for their son" (and daughters if that be the case).

But there is this whole new outlet for promoting songs nowadays through TV. I guess you couldn't really call it new, but it definitely has seen more prominence of late.

Music soundtracks have always been integral to visual story telling, especially with movies (am I allowed to admit that I like that song from that Canadian songstress from the movie about some boat sinking?). The leading theme has always summed up in a convenient three to four minute package, what the gist of the movie essentially was.

With TV shows nowadays being of a higher calibre, music supervisors must think, "Beauty! Ten times as much film to play with for soundtrack!" Now, it's not necessarily the theme song that's played at the start of every episode, it's the song that's used to highlight a scene.

Grey's Anatomy is the show that comes to mind with their use of music. Though many would like to say they were fans of Snow Patrol waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay before that song was heard on the show, heaps more out there fell in love with song because it was used on Grey's Anatomy at that particular moment (and it is a bloody brilliant song to boot as well!)

I was really excited last night when I heard Missy Higgins "Where I Stood" on Grey's Anatomy. Finally, an Australian artist is being heard as well, Aussie accent and all!
