My eccentric muse
March 8th 2009 23:22
Eccentric is good.
Many people in history have been branded as eccentric, and you know what? Most of them were geniuses. To me, eccentricity is dominated by the feeling of surprise and the unexpected. It may have something to do with my low attention span, but unexpected elements in film, books and music keeps me riveted. Of course, the truly talented know what unexpected element to add, to contrast yet reinforce their art. Not alienate and ruin.
Muse are talented. Super talented. Eccentrically, superbly talented. Haven’t yet met a Muse song that I didn’t like.
Who else can work the word “asphyxiated” into lyrics and not have it sound like a formal post mortem report? Although the song where that word features, “Time is Running Out” does mention quite a few different ways one can die. All in a very musical way of course.
However, the pinnacle of eccentricity is the excellently title “Hoodoo”.
To describe it using the least amount of words possible, I would say Spanish black and white spaghetti western meets moody film noir with a good dose of classic opera drama. (Hmmm, 18 words. At least I know if I were entering those “25 words or less” competitions I would be under the word count.)
The combination sounds weird I know. But it works. And it sounds just as good live.

What a coincidence as I've been listening to Muse this morning while I work. They are indeed unique, I can't think of another band that sounds like them.
Apt description, I agree:

Glad you agree with me. They definitely don't sound like most other bands out there.
Thanks for stopping by.

Just got onto Muse myself and whilst I cant listen to them all the time, I have to say they have one cool sound when it comes to certain afternoon listening. . and i too think you have summed it up brilliantly with the above description of their *style*
Super Massive Black Hole Rocks and I am left to wonder, which songs will be featured in New Moon, if any?

I'm a relatively new fan of theirs as well. I heard a few of their songs awhile ago, but only just really got into them in recent times. I am a huge fan of Supermassive Black Hole, and considering that Stephenie Meyer lists them as her muse, well who knows?? They may feature in the next few installments.

I agree that they are a band that I also can't listen to all the time. At times, they seem/feel a bit overmelodramatic and then at others it is that same theatrical feel that I love.
